چکیده

External human-machine interfaces (eHMIs) may be useful for communicating the intention of an automated vehicle (AV) to a pedestrian, but it is unclear which eHMI design most effective. In crowdsourced experiment, we examined effects (1) colour (red, green, cyan), (2) position (roof, bumper, windshield), (3) message (WALK, DON’T WALK, WILL STOP, WON’T light bar), (4) activation distance (35 or 50 m from pedestrian), and (5) presence visual distraction in environment, on pedestrians' perceived safety crossing road front yielding non-yielding AVs. Participants (N = 1434) had press key when they felt safe cross while watching random 40 out 276 videos approaching AV with eHMI. Results showed that green cyan eHMIs led higher than red eHMIs; no significant difference was found between cyan, bumper roof were more effective windshield, AVs, WALK compared followed by bar; bar yielded similar results text, caused lower activated early late, whereas green/cyan late early, effect. We conclude people adopt egocentric perspective, windshield ineffective position, often-recommended have avoided, has intricate related onset saliency.

Why and How Should Robots Behave Ethically?

for Plenary Lecture The prospect of intelligent robotic agents taking increasingly significant roles in our human society suggests that it would be prudent for robot designers to ensure that robot behavior is governed by some sort of morality and ethics — that robots should be trustworthy. But what would this actually mean? Research in artificial intelligence has profited from, and contributed ...

How Should Peer-Review Panels Behave?

Many governments wish to assess the quality of their universities. A prominent example is the UK’s new Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014. In the REF, peer-review panels will be provided with information on publications and citations. This paper suggests a way in which panels could choose the weights to attach to these two indicators. The analysis draws in an intuitive way on the concept ...

Citicoline Improves Human Vigilance and Visual Working Memory: The Role of Neuronal Activation and Oxidative Stress

Introduction: Psychomotor performance task is used to assess the arousal and cognitive functions of the central nervous system. Alternatively, human visual working memory reflects the capability of the individual’s short-term memory. Psycho-mental stimuli are linked to the stimulation of Malondialdehyde (MDA) formations. Citicoline is a nootropic nucleotide agent with a favorable effect on the ...
